Ondersteuningsdienste — our support structures are growing because we want every learner to develop holistically and have the opportunity to thrive in every sphere of life.
Remedial teaching at Onze Rust Primary School provides targeted, specialised instruction for learners struggling with core subjects like reading, writing and mathematics, helping them bridge academic gaps. It features small-group or one-on-one sessions, customised teaching methods, and a slower pace to strengthen fundamental skills — often addressing learning barriers like dyslexia or ADHD.
Our social worker acts as a vital link between home, school and community. The main focus is on learners' social, emotional and behavioural well-being to enhance academic success. We provide counselling, crisis intervention and early identification of mental health challenges, while supporting teachers and families as well.
We provide individual or group counselling and emotional support to learners; implement positive behaviour support and manage issues such as bullying or defiance; address barriers to learning like poverty, abuse or family instability; and link families to community resources while assisting teachers with classroom management strategies.
The social worker also addresses community challenges — like making the school a more trauma-informed environment and encouraging value-based interactions.
This essential, mandated structure coordinates support for learners experiencing barriers to learning and assists teachers with inclusive education practices. Our team consists of school management, specialised educators and teachers who implement screening, assessment and intervention strategies to ensure quality education for all learners. It also includes the Social Worker and an Occupational Therapist representative.
The youth worker is responsible for Rissies for Jesus mornings, Rissies for Jesus week, our camp, and promoting our school values. This plays a vital role in the morale of our staff and learners and creates the foundation for building a culture of care and generosity. The youth worker also serves as the SBST assistant, playing a critical role in empowering learners who need more individual or smaller-group support to thrive — and runs the admin system that drives this multi-disciplinary team.
Occupational therapy may be recommended for an individual learner for reasons that might affect learning or behaviour — such as motor skills, cognitive processing, visual or perceptual problems, difficulties staying on task, disorganisation, or sensory integration challenges.
A common manifestation of difficulties in school involves handwriting, in many cases because this is a key "occupation" that learners must master to succeed in school. Our Occupational Therapists (OT) work with teachers to evaluate the child and identify the underlying problems that may be contributing to handwriting difficulty. They also take into account the school, home and classroom environments to find ways to improve the handwriting or to identify ways the child can compensate.
The Rooi Rissies initiative was established to provide meals for learners whose families are in a temporary crisis. The aim of this project is to ensure that no learner has to face the school day hungry, creating a more supportive environment for learning and development. Generous sponsors contribute financially to make this initiative possible, enabling the programme to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of our learners.
Through encouraging material donations from learners, we also develop the habit of generosity in our learners, inspiring them to contribute positively to their communities in future.

Our u/7, u/8, u/9, u/11 and u/13 teams participate in the A-league. We kick off the season with the Night League at Willem Postma Primary. During the March school holiday we go on an annual Rugby Tour — excellent preparation for the league.
Our school's success is shown through some of our boys' participation in the annual Craven Week. We have very talented and highly qualified coaches with a passion for rugby and for children.
Onze Rust is proud to have 22 qualified coaches and umpires, with 9 holding NSA Level 1 qualifications. We participate in Bloemfontein's A-League and compete in numerous tournaments from February to September across the Free State.
Onze Rust is a proud host of two Mini-Netball Festivals each year. One of our coaches is currently the Chairperson of MMED Primary Schools Netball and a SASN graded umpire — with coaches and umpires at Free State level.

We love our Hockey! It constructs character. Hockey is offered to seven age groups for boys and girls aged 7–13 (u/7 through u/13). We compete provincially and participate in various tournaments. Onze Rust hockey forms part of the Mangaung Metro Hockey League during Term 3.
We are state-of-the-art with our own Astro/Multi-turf court. We also participate in ECHS practices (Elite Hockey Clinic) throughout the year. Our coaches represent the school at Provincial level.
The excitement is in the air regarding soccer at Onze Rust. All our fields are in excellent condition. Our school is the proud host of the inter-school league in Term 3, competing against other schools for the inter-school cup.
Onze Rust has an active chess club. We participate in the Bloemfontein league as well as in tournaments. Our players are doing really well and we are proud of them.

We coach learners from Grade 1 to Grade 7. Staff are sent on coaching courses to exploit each athlete's talents. Baie van ons atlete het al deelgeneem aan die Vrystaat Atletiekkampioenskappe.
'n Verskeidenheid kultuuraktiwiteite wat elke leerder se talente en belangstellings prikkel. Rissies vaar jaarlik uitstekend in ons kultuuraktiwiteite en spog met talle prestasies en toekennings.

Read moreOur school choir is a vibrant and accomplished ensemble. The choir has performed at the Pellissier Family Day, the Free State Choral Celebration Festival, Grandparents' Day at Onze Rust Church, and the UFS Graduation Ceremony.

A defining highlight was participation in the Udumo Choral Festival. By die Vrystaatse Eisteddfod 2024 het die koor 'n uitstaande A++-toekenning ontvang en is bekroon met die gesogte Corné van Pletzen-trofee vir die beste senior skoolkoor. Further success at ATKV Applous 2025 — Silver Certificate. Two members selected for the Bloemfontein Children's Choir.
Very competitive Orators competition for Junior (Gr 1–3) and Senior (Gr 4–7). First semester: English or Afrikaans. Second semester: both languages required. Year-end results determine the best Orator per age group.

Four age groups: Pre-Primary (Gr RR–R), Foundation Phase (Gr 1–3), Junior Revue (Gr 4–5), Senior Revue (Gr 6–7) — boys and girls. Each year follows a unique theme. Two dedicated teachers per group.
Highlight: the Sand du Plessis Revue and Drummies Festival — performing in front of ±1,000 people. Rivista competition results consistently 84–97% (A+ / A++).
At Onze Rust, we provide highly motivating and engaging opportunities that inspire creative potential. Imaginative activities develop social interaction, emotional regulation, and fine & gross motor skills.
Learners are encouraged to explore creativity and express themselves with confidence. We take part in a number of annual competitions, giving learners a platform to celebrate their artistic achievements.
Rissies for Jesus is a special weekly gathering held every Thursday, where learners, teachers, parents, and members of the wider community, including TREE, come together in a spirit of unity and faith. This time of fellowship provides an opportunity to worship, reflect, and listen to the Word of God in a welcoming and uplifting environment. It strengthens the spiritual foundation of our school community, encourages positive values, and fosters a sense of belonging and purpose among all who attend.
The Rissies for Jesus program also offers special activities throughout the year. A weekend Camp for Grades 4 – 7 learners where they also worship together, participate in discussions about the Bible, and explore their faith in a fun and engaging environment. These activities help deepen learners’ faith, encourage meaningful connections, and provide opportunities for growth both spiritually and socially.
Once a term, the grade 7 learners are invited to the Boys and Girls Club. This is an initiative started by TREE (Transforming Educational Environments), and it is now part of the Rissies for Jesus calendar. This is a fun Friday evening built around the premise that identity precedes activity. In a world where children are taught that their identity is built on their achievements, the approval of others, a like on Instagram, etc., it is vital to create a space for learners who want to learn about an identity built on who Christ says they are. That they are loved, chosen and called! This is a voluntary event, and parents are invited to join this team so they can continue walking this path with their children when they enter High School. It is a fun-filled evening with great topics like “the comparison trap”. Parents prepare amazing snacks for the learners and set up exciting décor and it is a wonderful moment of synergy between parents, learners and the Onze Rust staff.
Our afternoon study programme provides a safe, structured and supportive environment where learners complete their homework under supervision. With the guidance of experienced staff, the focus is on developing effective study habits, self-discipline and academic growth — relieving pressure on parents and helping learners be better prepared for tests and examinations.
